History of Pacific Asia Resource Center (PARC)

1969
Volunteer members from “Japan Peace for Vietnam Committee (Beheiren)” began publication of English quarterly Journal “AMPO”

1973
“AMPO” editorial office institutionalized itself and established Pacific Asia Resource Center (PARC)

1979
Began publication of Japanese quarterly “Sekai Kara (From the World)”

1982
Launched the PARC Freedom School

1983
Celebrated 10th anniversary and proclaimed PARC International Solidarity Manifesto

1989
Hosted international people’s events named the People’s Plan for 21st Century (PP21) across Japan, and drafted the Minamata Declaration- Alliance of Hope, which was ultimately amended and declared at the People’s Plan Minamata Meeting

1992
Participated in the organizing committee of PP21 in Thailand where the Rajchadamanoen Pledge was declared

Transitioned publication of Japanese periodical “Sekai Kara” to “Alternatives”

1993
Called on civil society organizations to hold the International People’s Tribunal to Judge the G7 at Tokyo, and drafted the Indictment

1995
Launched a Japanese NGO network on ODA Reform

1996
Participated in the organizing of the third PP21 in Nepal where The Sagarmatha Declaration was declared

1998
Organized the International Symposium on Asian Economic Crisis and People’s Alternatives in Tokyo

1999
Launched the East Timor People’s Peace Relief Project (PPRP), and set up Dili office at East Timor

2000
Organized the Jubilee 2000 Okinawa Conference paralleling the G7 Okinawa Summit along with both domestic and international civil society collaborators

2001
Paused the print publication of “AMPO”

2002
Launched a research project on “Globalization” focusing on 100 Yen Shop (i.e. Japanese dollar stores)

2003
Held the PARC 30 Year Anniversary International Symposium, “Another World is Possible”

2004
Launched the Sri Lanka Fishing Community Support Project

2005
Held the Symposium “50 Years of ODA”

2007
Participated in the First Asian Forum on Solidarity Economy in Manilla, and agreed to host the second such gathering

2008
Branched off the Inter-peoples cooperation projects and fairtrade projects into a sister organization Parcic

2009
Hosted the Second Asian Forum on Solidarity Economy at Tokyo

2011
Joined a domestic network of people’s movements resisting the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement called “People’s Movement Against the TPP”

2014
Began a research project on mineral mining and supply chains, and joined the “Ethical Keitai Campaign, a consortium of Japanese NGOs working on supply chain due diligence issues.

Joined Fair Finance Guide Japan, a coalition of Japanese NGOs monitoring Japanese private finance institutions and which is a part of Fair Finance International

2016
Paused paper publication of “Alternatives”

2021
Joined the Make Amazon Pay international coalition and supported the protests organized by Amazon delivery workers on Black Friday
